Live Long University Wits!!!

“An upstart crow beautified with our feathers”, I would add, Robert Greene’ is not of his times but for all times. His attack on William Shakespeare for his fame despite his 'disqualification' of not being a university educate, is timeless. Literary figures including Shelley, Byron and Keats too have faced music and been addressed as the members of 'cockney school of poetry'. What one becomes or unbecomes does not entirely depend on one’s academics.

My being a post graduate from a “non standard” university through distance mode has often been a matter of laughter, mockery and under estimation among the peers at workplaces. These ‘University Wits’ being proud for their accomplishment, marginalize and victimize these poor ‘Shakespeares’. (I did not mean that I am Shakespeare). It would be better if one looks back and find how far the possible number of exposures are availed while pursuing their academics in reputed universities.

A similar disparity is faced by the private college faculty nonetheless the students they make, receive certificates equivalent to the certificates obtained by the stakeholders of Government/Aided institutions. Even these students after they score high marks and get admitted in the famous institutions, deliberately forget their past and try to wipe off their memories of undergoing education in the ‘less’ reputed private institution which has scaffolded them to get admission in the so called ‘reputed institution’.  Attitude matters!

The quality of a teacher depends not entirely on where she/he had their education but how far they keep on educating and upgrading themselves being into teaching. Making use of the opportunities to upskill and upgrade oneself is the only way out. Let’s hope that a day will turn up in future where the quality of teachers is counted not with their past achievements but how they act in the present to patch up their past incompetency.

Until then, live long university wits!

  1. Beautifully articulated. I could find myself in the author's shoes for I have had my degrees; both UG and PG from a renowned Open University. Fortunately, majority of my peers have similar degrees since we joined the Armed forces at a tender age. So haven't felt the inferiority complex till now.

  3. Well said Ma'am .. Quite introspective for those who always tried to erase their less privileged accolades in the plumage of the most distinguished configuration of erudite infrastructure.. Why this practice of assessing someone based on the name of his university and institution is still hovering above the educated milieu? Why can't the system see through the potential of the individual and not through the uniform he wore?
If you are the product of reputed as well as less known institutions, enjoy your membership in the big system and never deny the one that taught you were the one that was important, not the system..
    Certainly, attitude matters!
Show ur attitude, and you will be amazed to see how it outgrows ur pride and sprouts out of ur uniforms to discover a whole 'new you' in your own skin...
