Attention! Janaganamana
The latest movie in Malayalam that hit the screens in the last few weeks is Janaganamana. It encompasses political, racist and sexist ideologies prevalent in the society. Similar to Lucifer and Ramleela, the movie is centred around the vitality of Media in creating truth.
The ACP, Sajjan Kumar, plays a vital role throughout the movie by winning the hearts of the college students who rose to their feet against the mysterious murder of their teacher, Sabha Mariyam. As the plot progresses, it is revealed that the incidents portrayed in the movies are mere recreation based on the plans made by the political leaders. It was a twist in the movie when Suraj in the ACP's role is found having a vital part in devising the whole drama.
Media as a weapon to create 'truth' is manifested in the movie. Sabha, a teacher who raised her voice against the hypocrites, was hit and run by her colleague. A case of hit and run was reported as raped and burnt to death merely out of news value the incident would create. When the whole community comprising of her family and students took for granted the news and fought for justice, it was Adv. Aravind who put forward the evidences against the case.
Even though the movie projects the political agenda behind every such news and the role played by media in convincing its viewers, the real question is how stupid common man is. Shakespeare has interestingly showcased the fluctuating mindset of the mob in his renowned play Julius Caesar which was staged in end of 16th century! It's pity that despite we live in a world with advanced technology, our attitude remains the same as Shakespeare's time! We look for faster internet and grab news around the world at the finger tip. We are careless of the originality of what we hear. People are too busy nowadays!
Everything starts at home. A change can begin from an individual. It's time that we analyse and gauge the authenticity of news and Media reports that scroll down beneath our nose. Before believing and spreading an information one has to make sure if it really carries the 'truth'!
